Peter Hong

As a Principal Advisor for Larta’s Commercialization Assistance Programs, Peter brings over 30 years of experience in strategic business planning, startup operations, product development, market strategy, and IP strategy. He has helped Larta entrepreneurs in many fields including agriculture, energy, defense, and transportation.

Peter’s career started in the agricultural and construction equipment industry, which led to consulting with companies in equipment design and manufacturing, as well as innovative design of products to enhance traditional equipment performance, soil and water analysis, and inland and offshore aquaculture.

In the area of energy, he has helped companies involved with onshore and offshore wind measurement and profiling, large and small wind turbine equipment design and manufacture, DC electric energy collection and transmission, as well as solar and geothermal energy conversion, specifically for remote applications.

His defense experience has been focused in the areas of long-range ballistic armament performance and small-arms threat protection devices for personal and vehicle armor.

Finally, Peter’s transportation experience includes aerospace parts enhancements, automotive engine and transmission components performance, and maintenance logistics.

Peter is also currently the COO of New Tech Ceramics, a mature startup that’s commercializing a revolutionary ceramic material. Before turning his attention to using his experience as a business development consultant and CEO coach to small and mid-sized companies, Peter served as president of a small custom-engineered material handling equipment company where he orchestrated a leveraged buyout of a material handling division. Peter has also served 8 years as mayor to the city of Laurens, Iowa, 12 years as County Board of Health Chair, and 12 years as the Ergonomics Council Chair for the Material Handling Institute of America.

Peter continues his work on the state level as a member of the executive committee of the Iowa Innovation Council, influencing state legislation and economic investment in Iowa’s innovation economy. He also serves as a director of the Iowa Innovation Corporation. Peter serves as a business development consultant, both privately as Senior Partner of Executive Management Resource Group, and on behalf of the Iowa State University Center for Industrial Research and Science, helping small to medium-sized businesses grow. He regularly serves on business review panels for VentureNet Iowa and the Iowa State University Regent’s Innovation Fund to determine startup business readiness and funding investment.

Peter holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is also a registered professional engineer in Illinois.
