James Brown

Jim is a Principal Advisor for Larta’s Commercialization Assistance Programs. He is also Principal at J. L. Brown & Co., a strategic advisory firm for deep technology ventures. He helps find markets, partners, customers and investors for emerging companies in software and network security, machine learning, artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, data mining, sensors, sensor networks, semiconductor design & testing, and advanced electronic devices.

Jim founded J. L. Brown & Co. in 1980 to provide deep strategic and analytical services to the IT industry. His early clients included American Medial International, Kodak Corporation, NCR Corporation, Siemens, TRW and Xerox Corporation. In 1990, Jim joined client Teradata Corporation as a strategy director and member of its executive committee as the company grew from $5 million to over $300 million in sales in 3 years time. In 1994, Jim returned to private practice with a focus on the commercial advancement of new ventures founded on deep technology from industrial, university and national laboratories. Since then, he has counseled emerging company founders and investors through lectures, panel discussions, workshops, mentorships, executive roundtables and consulting engagements.

Jim holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and a MS/MBA in Management Science/Operations Research the MIT Sloan School of Management. He is a founder of the Caltech/MIT Enterprise Forum and served on the Global Advisory Board of MIT Enterprise Forum Inc. He was also an early member of the Pasadena Angels and speaks often to angel investors about deep technology ventures. Jim served as a First Lieutenant in the US Army Signal Corps, earned the Bronze Star for service in Vietnam and worked several years thereafter as a defense policy analyst.
