Michael Ott is a seasoned executive and entrepreneur focused on agriculture and energy. Recently he was an Entrepreneur In Residence for Nidus Investment Partners and the founder of Terra Biologics, an algae biofertilizer company. At Terra Biologics he was responsible for licensing the technology, creating the business model, raising capital, establishing the laboratory and performing field trials. He authored 5 patents focused on biological fertilizers. He clearly identified multiple value propositions and found partners all over the globe. Terra Biologics successfully raised four rounds of capital, with each round being oversubscribed and is pursuing licensing options for their intellectual property.
At Nidus Investment Partners, Michael was an integral part of a team that scouted technology for corporate venture capital partners. Nidus examined early stage opportunities focused on energy and agriculture for Monsanto, Novozymes and Bunge. Nidus reviewed several hundred technologies for its partners, focusing on market, team, regulatory, intellectual property and technology. Promising opportunities, such as Terra Biologics, were founded at Nidus and then blossomed with the injection of outside capital.
For the last 12 years, Michael has helped raise capital and create strategic partnerships for young companies looking to grow. Over the course of his career he has raised over $150 million for various projects and been the first employee at 6 different ventures. He has a Master's degree in Chemistry and started his career at a hedge fund. From there, he transferred those science and finance skills to positions in venture capital, management and development.
Michael has lived in Iowa his entire life while traveling extensively. Terra Biologics performed successful field trials in India as well as multiple locations in the US. BIOWA brought speaking and deal making opportunities in Ukraine, Ireland, Brazil and Canada. Michael has set up university partnerships with Iowa State, Northwestern, Arkansas, North Carolina State and Washington University in St Louis.
