Joe is a Principal Advisor for Larta’s Commercialization Assistance Programs. He has over 39 years of experience in the fossil power and alternative energy industries most of which was in the development of new business initiatives at Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. His managerial experience included functional roles relating to power procurement and sales, project and business proposal development, structuring strategic partnerships, marketing, and asset management. In 1985, he initiated the 85 MW Cambria Cogeneration Project, one of the nation’s first bituminous waste coal-fired powerplants using circulating fluidized bed technology. This unit became the cornerstone of Air Products environmental and energy business. In the early 1990’s, he structured a partnership with LTV Steel and Centerior Energy which obtained DOE funding of over $150 million for an industrial clean coal project intended to serve the steel industry by coupling steel making with power generation technology. In 2000, he initiated a service business offering for Air Products negotiating project development, construction, and operations agreements for a 154 MW peak power station owned by Exelon Corporation and located at an Air Products industrial gas complex. He was the commercial sponsor of steam methane reformer-gas turbine integration as a means of differentiating Air Products position in the hydrogen market through delivery of low-cost power. One of these projects earned Power Magazine’s “Top Plant” award in 2007. Focusing on energy recovery from industrial by-products and wastes, in 2008, he co-patented an offering to the steel industry to expand the functionality of a blast furnace to include the production of fuel for gas turbine based power generation. He led the development effort to secure an award of $30 million from the US DOE to implement a prototype of the technology at a steel mill in Ohio. To further enhance the economics of that project, he secured legislation designating the power generated from blast furnace gas eligible for renewable energy credits.
Joe holds a BS degree in Geology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Master’s degree in Finance from Lehigh University.
