Robert "Bob" Calcaterra
As a Principal Advisor, Dr. Calcaterra provides strategic and business advice to recipients of federal grants from the NIH, USDA, NOAA and DOE. Additionally, he also serves as a subject matter expert in financing, finance, strategic planning, IP, and management team planning to these grantees. Robert has mentored well over 100 companies in the fields of life sciences devices and medical IT, cleantech and energy, agricultural diagnostics and plant science, aquaculture, and pest management.
Currently, Robert is the Managing Director of Startup Partners International, LLC and Exeteur Group, LLC. He is on the Board of Euclises Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Moleculera Labs, Inc.. He serves as Board Chair of CardiaForm, LLC and Immunovalent, LLC, FloraScentials LLC, and is the CEO of Med Advance Surgical, LLC.
Prior to those engagements, Robert was a Principal at StartUp Midwest Management, a firm dedicated to the start-up, structuring, managing, and financing of very early stage companies, where he has personally been involved in raising in excess of $200M for startups. Previously, he served as President and CEO of The Nidus Center for Scientific Enterprise, where he led efforts to commercialize technologies in the plant and life sciences. Before Nidus, Robert spent 19 years at three technology incubators where he oversaw the creation of over 50 companies, raised well over $250M in equity financing, and served on the boards of at least 40 of those companies. He was also an adjunct faculty member in the Biomedical Engineering Department at Washington University and consults for many public and private institutions including the USDA and EPA, as well as University & City of Madison, Wisconsin, and the Universities of Iowa and Nebraska, on commercialization of technology. He also served on the safety board of NCAR when he resided in Boulder, CO in the 1980's. In 1995, he was appointed by President Bill Clinton as a delegate to the White House Conference on Small Business.
Robert received both his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering at the University of Nebraska— Lincoln. He received his Doctorate in Chemical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis and later completed Harvard University's Industrial Research Institute Executive Management Seminar. He recently received the 2018 St. Louis Business Journal Lifetime Achievement Award.
