Toby is a Principal Advisor for Larta’s Commercialization Assistance Programs. His professional experience includes a combination of developing technology, raising capital, and managing programs to commercialize biobased technologies and products. Toby has strong technical expertise in agriculture, aquaculture, fermentation, and bio-based product development.
Toby served as the National Program Leader of Agricultural Bioproducts for USDA’s National Institute for Food and Agriculture from 2016-2018. During his tenure, he managed programs that invested >$40M and provided program leadership for advancing technologies to enable large-scale adoption of bioproducts. He also managed the Biofuels and Bioproducts topic area of USDA’s SBIR program. Prior to USDA, Toby served as the Chief Technology Officer for BioProcess Algae, where he headed development of microbial products for animal feed and human nutritional markets. He directed process development, product development, as well as patent and regulatory filings. Toby has managed investments from state and federal government, public companies, and private investors, and he has consulted for numerous companies, ranging from small start-ups to large multinationals.
Toby holds a Ph.D. in Biogeochemistry from Stanford University, an M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Stanford University, and a B.A. in Environmental Sciences from Connecticut College.
