Dr. Toyonaga founded Ontogen Corporation (Carlsbad, CA) in June 1992 and led the company as President and CEO. Through private investment (Johnson & Johnson, Lombard Odier, Allen & Co., Sequoia Capital) and strategic alliances with major international pharmaceutical companies (Amgen, Kanebo/Nippon Organon, Boehringer Ingelheim, Novo Nordisk), he was able to raise over $100 million dollars to fund the Ontogen drug discovery and development organization. The most advanced drug candidate, discovered in-house, has successfully completed Phase I trials. Before forming Ontogen, he served as Director, Corporate Development, of Protein Design Labs (Mountain View, CA). Prior to that, Dr. Toyonaga held various management positions with Ortho Pharmaceutical Corporation (Raritan, NJ), a Johnson and Johnson company. During his tenure, he was accepted as a Visiting Research Scientist at The Scripps Research Institute (La Jolla, CA) where he established the J&J Laboratories at Scripps. Before that he was a Visiting Scientist at the California Institute of Technology (Pasadena, CA), Yale University School of Medicine (New Haven, CT) and was a MRC postdoctoral fellow at the Ontario Cancer Institute (Toronto, ON). While at the Ontario Cancer Institute, he was involved in the discovery of the human T Cell Receptor. Dr. Toyonaga received a Ph.D. in physical organic chemistry from the University of Toronto (St. George Campus, Toronto, ON).
