Direct control, a new paradigm for home and building automation:
Direct control uses a real-time physical or wireless network to monitor,
integrate, and control, uniformly, all home and building devices (HVAC,
dishwashers, elevators, etc.), replacing costly device controllers with
inexpensive state boards. Software control cycles in a central controller
transform the network into a set of plug-and-play state devices that can
be integrated for energy savings and whole building security, with off-site
monitoring or reprogramming, and most important, without added automation
costs.

The near-constant-force electrical connectors use recent advances
to achieve a constant contact force for electrical contacts, thus improving
the reliability of electrical systems. It is estimated that 85 percent of
automotive electrical problems and 70 percent of computer hardware problems
occur at the contacts. This compact connector addresses the problem by producing
a constant force for a wide range of deflections. Potential markets include
automotive, computer, medical, and military electronics.
CSU San Bernardino
- GEM Power, LLC
Licensing Opportunity
GEM Power has developed a revolutionary intelligent battery charging technology. The technology allows a single charger to correctly charge all battery types automatically at their optimal charging rates - as little as 30 minutes with no life shortening battery damage. The technology was developed and tested under Navy contracts and commercialized to a charger for First Responders under a CSUSB/OTTC grant. The technology has a patent pending with GEM Power owning all commercialization rights.
Illinois Institute
of Technology - Ether2
Licensing and Funding Opportunities
ETHER2'S High Performance computing technology eliminates the need for network middle hardware, including centralized network switches or routers. ETHER2 is made to resemble Ethernet and perform all of Ethernet's functions transparently. Therefore, implementation is easy because nothing changes at the network/application layers. ETHER2 features include single messaging, broadcast/multicast, quality of service (QoS), channel allocation, unlimited distance/scalability, and a control mini-slot architecture of which elements were adapted by the cable industry resulting in the standard 802.14.

Raum's first product, highly robust, temperature independent Sub One-volt
Voltage Reference is fully developed, awaiting patent issuance and ready
to market. A non-exclusive license agreement for this platform technology
has been reached with LSI Logic. Raum's second product, Digital AntennaTM(DA)
is a self calibrating pipeline ADC, in standard CMOS. A working architecture
of DA with 18 bit resolution, 50MHz bandwidth is developed and verified
by simulations. Further development of DA is based on customer applications.
UC Irvine - One-Cycle Control, Inc.
Funding Opportunity
One-Cycle Control (OCC) addresses the biggest market pain in power: control of 3-phase power conversion. Controller applications include Generation (grid-tied inverters), Distribution (VAR Compensation), Use (motor drives & communications), and Power Quality Conditioning (Active Power Filters) of 3-phase power. OCC controllers exactly solve the control equations; therefore, they are simple, fast, cost effective, and unconditionally stable without software, DSP, or computer interface. The 3-phase controller market is ~$2B - $5B. OCC, Inc. is raising $3M.

The Electrowetting Light Valve display is a backlit display consisting of a matrix of high-transmission light valves fabricated on a glass substrate similar to that of LCD display substrates. Using LCD display device drivers, the transmissivity of each light valve can be modulated to >80% in less than 10 ms. This is a quantum leap forward over LCD transmissivity of ~8%. Electrowetting light valves enable portable displays with greater brightness AND lower power and cost.

City of Hope - Vasix Corporation
Licensing and Funding Opportunities
Vasix is a pre-IND development phase company initially focused on developing oral therapies for the treatment of symptoms related to diabetes. Research during the last decade has shown that high circulating levels of glucose in diabetic patients produce Advanced Glycation Endproducts and that these are associated with, and may be causative agents for, tissue damage to the kidney, eye, nerve and blood vessels. Vasix is focused on developing and commercializing innovative therapies which target and eliminate AGE to treat diabetic complications.

UCLA - Eric Savitsky
Funding Opportunity
UCLA medical researchers have developed a low-cost, user friendly, PC-based method for medical procedure training. This invention integrates digital multimedia, three-dimensional modeling, motion sensor, and force feedback device technologies on a laptop computer. Advantages of this technology include providing safer, more economical, and effective procedural training methods for patients and medical careproviders. Minimizing the complication rates of medical procedures would improve patient care, decrease patient suffering, and result in significant healthcare cost savings.
UCLA - Nesher
Technologies, Inc.
Licensing and Funding Opportunities
Nesher Technologies is developing a ground-breaking ultra-sensitive and highly multiplexed tumor marker diagnostics system based on a mix-and-read sandwich assay involving alternating laser excitation (ALEX) fluorescence spectroscopy. Two very high-affinity recognition molecules, which are labeled with different color fluorescence dyes, bind to two mutually exclusive areas of the tumor marker molecule of interest. Coincident detection of the two colors in a femtoliter confocal detection volume using alternating laser excitation constitutes a positive target detection event.
