Profile: Broadley-James
Thanks
to a distribution decision made by Beckman Instruments back
in the late 1960's, Orange County-based Broadley-James
was able to penetrate the pH sensor market and become a leading
manufacturer over the next three decades. A recent CalTIP
grant will hopefully jump-start the company's next phase of
growth, as it explores the possibility of utilizing microfluidics
to advance its industry even further.

Urban
Technology: The Issues and The Impact
by
Prof. Sidney Morse
Just
last month, Los Angeles and the nation were reminded of the
fact that ten years ago, the worst civil unrest in American
history occurred. And, while the eruption was ignited by what

7 - June 14: Tatum CFO and the Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial
Leadership Web-Based Workshop, Meeting the Growth Challenge:
A Map Through No Man's Land
Is
your company growing fast - but operations are strained? Is
service suffering? Are managers stretched and overburdened?
Is cash tight, in spite of profitability? Is growth controlling
you instead of you controlling it? You might be in "No
Man's Land" - a stage of development that all companies
encounter after achieving early success. It is the place where
the rules you used to start the business no longer seem to
work and the effects are disorienting. The program helps you
get out of this stage and begin a path to a new level of success.
To ensure high quality peer-to-peer discussions, participation
is limited to CEOs and Presidents of companies with $3 million
to $20 million in annual sales that are experiencing adverse
symptoms of fast growth. Contact Marianne Hudson at 816-932-1447
or e-mail: mhudson@emkf.org

17: California Council of Science and Technology Hitachi California
Public Affairs Forum 2002, Innovation at Risk
Research and technology innovation has fueled the rapid expansion
of high-tech industries during the past decade, and helped
make California's economy the fifth largest in the world.
Yet several recent studies, including CCST's Critical Path
Analysis, point to a growing science and engineering workforce
gap that is threatening the nation's technology based economy.
This Innovation Forum will provide the opportunity to bring
sound analysis of the technical workforce production process
and to bring together business and academic leaders to develop
a specific action plan for California. The event, consisting
of both presentations and panel discussions, takes place from
8:30 am - 4pm, at the Keck School of Medicine, USC. Please
RSVP for this meeting by May 9, by calling 916-492-0996 or
by email at innovation@ccst.ucr.e.
