SCTVF
2002: A Renewed Focus
SCTVF
has always remained dedicated to the dissemination of thoughtful,
grounded and unbiased information to keep the investment
community abreast of emerging technologies and trends. The
current uncertainty that looms over the technology industry
now makes the need for timely, sound, and relevant information
even more important. The urge to identify the next big thing
has become a confusing guessing game that has left new areas
of innovation at risk of being overhyped. This year SCTVF
has chosen to focus on three sectors which have generated
much attention and interest (Life
Sciences, Nanotechnology, and Security Technologies),
in an effort to bring sound, useful knowledge and information
on how they really are important to investors, the marketplace,
and the future.

The
Graying of California (originally published in The
Wall Street Journal)
The victory of Bill Simon--a political neophyte with
few roots in California politics--over Los Angeles Mayor
Richard Riordan for the Republican nomination for governor
on Tuesday virtually assures the Golden State four more
years of the stolid persona of 59-year-old Gray Davis. California
may remain the nation's most dynamic economic, cultural
and technological center, but its politics are devolving
into a idealess quagmire at an alarming rate.

See-through scanners set off alarms (CNN)
The Rapiscan Secure 1000 (profiled
in a recent LA VOX article) is among several instruments
being tested by the nonprofit National Safe Skies Alliance
for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at
Florida's Orlando International Airport. Of six systems
being tested, three are used for passenger-checkpoint searches
and the others are for screening checked baggage and cargo.
The reason the Rapiscan is drawing outcries from civil-liberties
activists is that it deploys a low-level X-ray technology
to scan a person's body through clothing.
