Ever since the creation of Mosaic at Champaign-Urbana in the mid-90's, the role of universities, labs and schools in producing substantial, even earth-shattering inventions has become well-known to a much larger group of people than academics, industrial elites and venture capitalists. Those latter groups have always understood the strong, symbiotic connections between the halls of academe and the lucre of the marketplace.

Tech Transfer : From The Research Space To The Marketplace
The successful commercialization of technologies which have been fostered inside research environments has become an all too rare accomplishment. Research institutions, university and non-university based, continually face a growing number of obstacles and a dwindling source of government funding to help kickstart potentially marketable technologies. The relationship research centers have with the US government has become increasingly strained, as the already difficult process of acquiring funds is slowed or ceased.

larta League: Chemat's Tech Transfer Triumph
Chemat Technology is in an enviable position--they've successfully branched out of the grant-funded research space into the marketplace, becoming profitable in the year 2000, half of their revenue attributed to customer sales. The CalTIP grant recipients decided to seek out private equity for the first time at last month's Venture Forum 2001 for their optical coating material, a product they feel is in prime condition for full-scale commercialization.
