The biotech boom: see you in court
The latest battlefront in the Great Stem Cell Kerfuffle flared up
on Monday in the U.S. District Court in Madison, Wisconsin. No real
surprise: the litigants are the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation
(WARF) at the University of Wisconsin, where human embryonic stem
cells were first isolated a few years ago and patented; and Geron
(Nasdaq: GERN) of Menlo Park, California, which paid for the exclusive
right to develop six tissue types from those cells. Given Congress's
push to chill stem cell research and President George W. Bush's
decision last Thursday to confine federal funding of such research
to 60 existing embryonic stem cell lines, this case matters. Specifically,
it's vital because most scientists in this field believe there are
not, in fact, 60 lines, but probably something more like 10 or less.
