Southern California's commercial real estate market has been bruised by the technology slump, particularly the Westside. The former center of gravity for many of the region's Internet-fueled businesses is becoming a ghost town of unused high-tech property. As landlords are cushioned comfortably with lines of credit, capital-drained companies are scrambling to dump or sublease prime office space--desperately offering an array of free incentives, from a fortune in furniture and technical equipment to luxurious Polynesian vacations.

Useful stats I: 2nd Quarter VC by state, region
No matter which source one uses, venture capital investments continued their decline during the second quarter of 2001. The Moneytree(tm) survey, released this week by PricewaterhouseCoopers and Venture One, Inc., found a 21 percent decline from the previous quarter. Second quarter investments fell to $8.2 billion from $10.4 billion in the first three months of the year. Only 669 companies received funding, down 11 percent from the 752 firms funded during the first quarter.

Eight cities from the Guangdong Province of China will team to host a Business Fair, 2001, bringing with them a laundry list of goods and products to purchase in the United States for a total of $221 million. It will be held on Tuesday, September 11, at the Universal Hilton Hotel from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. A complimentary lunch will be served. With emphasis on technology products, the eight cities are looking to purchase computer chips, circuit boards, and other technology equipment as well as form joint ventures with American companies.
