 Buckyballs Breathe a Sigh of Relief

Named after the great American architect Buckminster Fuller, buckyballs are getting a lot of attention at Purdue University. Part of Purdue’s research is focused on the environmental impact of these ultrasmall particles.
Concerns have been expressed that release of any nanoparticles into the environment could harm the microorganisms plants, people and other animals depend on. Purdue researchers came up with two approaches to see if buckyballs change the way microorganisms do their jobs. One was to analyze the genetics of microorganisms to look for changes, the other was to measure the output of carbon dioxide and methane, which are released when microbes degrade organic matter ... more

Fresh Faces

Theralase Technologies, based in Canada, designs, manufactures and distributes patented, super-pulsed laser and light-based technology systems used in a wide range of therapeutic clinical applications. The Theralase technology platform has been proven clinically effective in non-invasive pain management and clinical therapy, including hundreds of different neural muscular skeletal conditions such as sports injuries, repetitive strain injuries and arthritis. Theralase has patented technologies currently under research and development focused on two main areas: increased clinical efficacies in therapeutic treatment and the destruction of cancer, viruses, bacteria and fat cells through the light activation of specially designed photodynamic compounds.

Meditrina Pharmaceuticals, a Wayne State University spin-off, is a clinical-stage specialty pharmaceutical company focused on developing and commercializing novel therapies that treat women’s reproductive system disorders, with an initial focus on gynecologic and aromatase-mediated conditions with serious unmet medical needs. National Science Foundation funded Innovation Fellows

Washington University in Saint Louis, in conjunction with the University of Missouri, the Center for Emerging Technologies, and Innovate Saint Louis, is inviting applications for National Science Foundation funded Innovation Fellows. The Institute for Triple Helix Innovation is a federally funded non-profit in Hawaii focusing on government, industry and academia collaborations for innovation in the Asia-Pacific region.
