Bright Outcome Uses Patient Reported Outcomes to Improve
Patient Care
Bright Outcome, a 2007-2008
Larta NIH-CAP participant,
looks to introduce Patient Reported Outcomes (PRO) into clinical practice to improve
patient care by enhancing communication between the patient and care provider while
reducing costs. PRO usually measures a patient’s health status and quality of life
by asking validated questions about the patient's physical, mental, and social well-being.
The participation in Larta’s NIH-CAP program was a defining moment for our business. Before CAP, we struggled greatly to find our company identity and direction. Our CAP advisors helped us understand our own strengths and weaknesses and develop a long-term business strategy that fundamentally transformed our business and turned our primary competitor into our primary partner. We simply cannot be where we are today without the tremendous help that we received from CAP.The relationship with PROMIS has proven to be instrumental in progressing Bright Outcome's technology. The company is currently running studies with major University hospitals and research centers including Northwestern University, MD Anderson Cancer Center, University of Arizona, University of Washington at Seattle, University of Illinois at Chicago, and University of Utah. In a recent small-scale pilot trial, Bright Outcome found that patients using their PRO system showed significant improvements over those in control on overall quality of life, physical well-being and functional well-being. When "high-frequency users" (those who triggered more symptom alerts) were compared with control, the improvements were even more pronounced and even patients' social well-being was improved significantly. Larta has high hopes for Bright Outcome in the future as they look to expand their use of PRO to integrate all members of a patient’s support network and community resources. |
