A
Special Message from larta
larta
joins the nation in mourning the loss and the tragedy of
last Tuesday's terrorist attacks. We remember Edmund Glazer,
of MRV Communications in Chatsworth, and Dan Lewin of Akamai
in Cambridge, Mass, as well as other
members of the technology community that have been lost
to these horrific attacks. And to all the thousands of families
affected by this national tragedy, we can offer only the
comfort of the company of millions of us, rendered mute
and despairing as our world was transformed.
Of
course, we'll survive. Ours is a resilient culture. And people
all around the world survive catastrophe and roiling despair
all the time.
And
yet, we recoil from what The New York Times, in
a moving editorial,
calls "history's rift," the moment at which our
times changed. Whether we'll ever be able to look at our yesterdays
without the dirt and debris of the moments after is unclear.
We
have lost much.

Wall
Street's Relocation Worries Return
Up until Tuesday, the idea of moving Wall Street out of New York
seemed as nonsensical as relocating Hollywood to Nebraska. In the
aftermath of the World Trade Center disaster, however, many survivors
in the financial industry are likely to reevaluate the systems and
traditions that concentrate them in Lower Manhattan. And that, in
turn, could revive previously rejected ideas for greater decentralization
of the U.S. financial markets--turning the New York Stock Exchange's
trading floor into a historical artifact.

An Unfathomable Attack
Remember the ordinary, if you can. Remember how normal New York
City seemed at sunrise, as beautiful a morning as ever dawns in
early September. The polls had opened for a primary election, and
if the day seemed unusual in any way, that was the reason
the collective awareness that the night would be full of numbers.
All the innumerable habits and routines that define a city were
unbroken. Everyone was preoccupied, in just the way we usually call
innocence.
